It certainly seems a narrow-minded way of looking at it, yes. But it's also quite true that people will often assign more value to something because it's rarer or more difficult to obtain. Precious stones and metals, for example; while any of them can be considered beautiful, people will pay far more for those that are the most rare than those that are the most common...
