Well, for Trainers, there's always the Gym challenge. Once your Pokemon are strong enough, you can take on a Gym with a really strong trainer called a Gym Leader. There are eight of them and they have Gyms spread out all across the region. If you beat them, you get a Badge, and you're, like, some kind of a master trainer if you get all eight!
