I looked at the date today, and I thought it would be fitting to bring up something I've been wondering for a while.

[It's been a while since Elsa got contemplative over the network. Thankfully, Elsa doesn't look all that upset or nervous, so it's nothing serious!]

Years pass here, and we all age. This is my second birthday in Johto; according to the calendar, I should be twenty-three today.

But that's only compared to how time passes here. What about back home? If we return home after spending years here, do we return as we were when we were first brought here? Or do we just... return to our land older, as we are now? I can't imagine how that might change things in our worlds, even if we have no memories of this place when we go home.

[... Okay yeah it did get kind of deep.]

It's curious, isn't it? Especially when one's taken from a date that doesn't match the date here when they first arrive.

Whoa, whoa, birthdays are important yearly shindigs. Tell me you're at least getting a cake or something with Anna, some things are sacred.

[She laughs. Boy, she's pretty sure that was the same way Anna reacted when Elsa told her she didn't need to throw a party...

Oh, of course. I can't very well pass up an opportunity to have a bit of delicious chocolate cake now, can I?

I would try to protest, but if there's one thing I learned from Anna, it's that it's absolutely pointless to protest with someone who's truly set their mind to something.

[Dave actually grins a little as he scrawls Elsa's birthdate down, because having something in common with Anna is simply the best kind of compliment there is.]

Maybe your culture doesn't recognize the importance of a new click in your personal year counter, but where I come from, birthdays are simply the biggest days there are.

So look out for a giftwrapped airmail delivery and a rambling heartfelt letter next year, Miss E. It's gonna be a doozy.

Oh. That's... quite a strange phrase for "birthday".

[Elsa rolls her eyes as he writes, but the smile on her face confirms that she's not actually annoyed or anything.]

Fine, I suppose I'll just have to accept it. On one condition, though.

[He tilts his head slightly with a quizzical noise.]

You tell me the date of your birthday, so I can prepare something in return.

He looks still taken aback for a moment, then smiles, just slightly.]

December 3rd. So it's one-two-three, real easy to remember.

[Darn, just missed it... but she's definitely committing that date to memory for next year!]

Excellent. That means you have plenty of time to prepare for the celebration next year!

[Well, he can't very well tell her to skip it, after the big deal he just made about her birthday.]

It's gonna be a big one, you know. Eighteen's the year of majority in my time and place.

Eighteen?

[Her eyebrows raise in surprise.]

Well then! I'll be sure to have something extra-special planned for you!

[YEAH we don't really know how he lived this long either.]

I like the cakes that look like rainbow sprinkles exploded inside them. Dunno what they're called. With lots of frosting. Actually someone could probably just make a cake out of frosting and I'd be good.

Frosting, hm? Chocolate or vanilla? Or both?

Depends on if sprinkles are involved.

Oh? How does that change things?

Sprinkles totally go better with vanilla, you know? Like, otherwise the chocolate would overpower them. And they'd give vanilla the texture it needs. Science, girl.

I suppose I could understand that.

But honestly, could you truly say no to a topping that could make a delicious cake even sweeter, no matter what the exact taste is like?

Probably not. My Abjure-jutsu is weak, especially when it comes to consumables of the junk variety.

Also if it really came down to it I'd probably eat cardboard slathered in Cheez Whiz, so, y'know. Picky isn't a thing I am.

[... Well. Uh. Elsa's trying not to look disgusted, but that's. A little hard.]

It's fake cheese spread that comes in a spray can.

... Well then. I can promise you that things will never become dire enough that you'll need to survive off.... that.

Hahaha. Good to know. I mean, I've eaten some pretty messed-up crap in my life, particularly over the last handful of years in space, but I don't mind reassurances that real food is usually near at hand.
